If you’re seeking a different type of Texas and a relaxed place where they encourage you to “come as you are” — then Austin is definitely worthy of your travels. Located in the 28th State in our Nation, that was admitted to the Union in 1845, Austin is also the State Capital of Texas and it delivers an experience for pretty much every type of traveler as it’s family-friendly, and a great solo getaway while equally fun for couples and friends. And that’s why we decided to make it the latest city featured in the “Destination Spotlight” — our popular series that airs on our nationally syndicated travel radio show.
In addition to being a capital city, Austin is also known as the Live Music Capital of the World. During regular times it hosts thousands of live concerts in hundreds of venues each year and is home to several top music festivals including Austin City Limits which is planned for October 2021. Many top musicians and talented locals have played in Austin’s venues and music is so popular here, that the city can host more than 100 events on a single evening. But you don’t need to attend a concert to hear live music in Austin as you’ll find many musicians play outdoors, in the airport, in coffee houses and even in grocery stores — they’re literally everywhere and it adds to the festive nature of this vibrant city.
What does Austin offer beyond its music scene? Basically, anything a traveler could want in a fulfilling trip. From cultural events to historic city tours, to a day trip to Hill Country for wine tastings and hikes, to Formula 1’s Grand Prix which is set for mid-October 2021 — you won’t be lacking for activities in Austin. Austin boasts world-class museum offerings of all types as well. For a complete history of Texas from prehistoric times to the modern-day, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is the official state museum of Texas. It’s currently open to visitors with pandemic restrictions in place; plan at least half a day to fully experience all the exhibits. One of the most prominent university art museums in our country exists on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. The Blanton Museum of Art has more than 20,000 items in its collection. The Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum and the red-granite State Capitol are other popular Austin attractions.
Currently one of the fastest-growing cities in America, Austin also offers plenty of outdoor space. Lady Bird Lake which is a river-like reservoir on the Colorado River flows right along downtown and is a major center for recreation. Residents and visitors can enjoy paddleboarding, kayaking, and dragon boats as the river’s waters are fairly calm. You’ll see many crew teams and clubs practicing along the straight courses.
Austin’s food scene is about as long and wide as the river! Certainly, you can’t go wrong with barbecue from Franklin’s BBQ or Sam’s BBQ, but frankly, you’re going to find just about every type of cuisine you can imagine in Austin these days. It’s a “foodie” city for sure and if tacos are your thing, one of the most famous places is Torchy’s — but there are many smaller taco joints ready to serve up some of the best Tex-Mex tacos around.
There are plenty of places to stay with most major hotel chains in the city and several historic properties that we feel are worth considering include Commodore Perry Estate, The Driskill, and Hotel Ella.
Starting in March, weather in Austin typically climbs back into the sunny ’70s making spring one of the nicest times of the year to visit.
