Located in the 22nd State in our Nation, that was admitted to the Union in 1819 — Huntsville, Alabama is worth visiting! Known as the “Rocket City” (we’ll explain in a moment), its northern location in the State offers a different type of Alabama experience. And that contributed to us choosing it for the latest city featured in the “Destination Spotlight” — our popular series that airs on our nationally syndicated travel radio show.
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast or are passionate about all things “space” — we think you’re sure to find Huntsville alluring! It’s likely you’ll see the positioning of the city as a “Journey Beyond Your Expectations” — and from our travels there a number of times over the years we think it’s well said. It’s home to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, which is a Smithsonian affiliate and the Official Visitor Center for NASA’s Marshal Space Flight Center. The center is a big draw for visitors, with one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia on display anywhere in the world. The center is also a destination for its popular Space Camp that attracts many kids from around the world. They even have education camp programs for adults with themes of exploration, robotics, and aviation. Spend any meaningful time in Huntsville and you’ll certainly see that science and technology are strong pillars woven into this southern city.
What you may not know is Huntsville also boasts a thriving arts and cultural scene with the center of that scene located in Lowe Mill — what was once a textile mill has been restored and repurposed into the Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment center and it’s some art collection! In fact, it’s the largest privately owned arts facility in the United States… Here it’s more of a question of what won’t you find? With over 150 working studios, all with an open door policy allowing for the public to visit artists during various phases of the full creative process, 7 art galleries, performance venues, restaurants, a community garden, and a multi-use theater, this is an absolute must-see and experience on your trip to Huntsville!
The food scene? Well, it’s the south -– so expect great BBQ and other Southern fare -– but expect to be surprised with a booming food scene that represents transplanted chefs who bring their cuisine with them. You’ll find low-key to fine dining with a lot in between to satisfy everyone’s tastes. This year’s Restaurant Week is August 13th – 22nd 2021.
For outdoor recreational activities, in addition to the opportunities awaiting you at Big Springs International Park and the many water activities available on the Tennessee River and nearby Lake Guntersville — you’ll find a popular Botanical Gardens and the eclectic Burritt On The Mountain with its variety of animals, nature trails, exhibits, concerts, and festivals.
Also when you visit Huntsville, take a short 45-minute drive east along Highway 72 to Scottsboro — and go experience the lost treasures awaiting you at Unclaimed Baggage. When travelers lose something on an airplane, and it’s not returned, it likely winds up here. From the eclectic to the ordinary — it’s a journey for both you and the lost items that you’ll likely end up buying in droves!
