With its sandy beaches, rich history, bustling cities, historical sites, and unique culture, Thailand is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Our Thailand packing list will help you make the most of your next trip to the Land of Smile.
The Best Time to Travel to Thailand
The best time to travel to Thailand is between November and February, when the weather is coolest and driest, and temperatures range from 70 to 80 Fahrenheit. March to April are hot and humid, with Songkran, or Thai New Year, celebrated mid-April. May to October is the rainy season, which tends to be extremely humid. Take when you’re visiting into account when choosing what to pack for Thailand.
Choosing the Right Luggage for Thailand
If you plan on staying in Bangkok or another city center for two or more weeks, consider carry-on and checked luggage with durable 360-degree spinner wheels, as you may need to navigate rough and uneven surfaces. Remember tomaximize packing space so you have room for souvenirs.
If you plan to travel extensively in the country, you’ll be better served with travel backpacks and duffel bags, especially if you visit some of Thailand’s 1,430 islands. Consider adding a smaller backpack to your luggage for day trips.
Clothing + Shoe Essentials
Thailand is tropical and humid, so pack light, breathable cotton, bamboo, rayon, or linen clothing. Tee shirts, light blouses, and shorts are ideal, as well as some long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect against mosquitos. Remember, if you plan on visiting Thai temples, you’ll need clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Thais tend to dress modestly, so avoid spaghetti string tops, extremely short shorts, and any clothing that reveals too much skin.
You’ll want to pack a swimsuit, sufficient underwear, and socks for the trip. A light rain jacket, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-protection sunglasses are essential. Comfortable shoes and sandals will serve you well in town, but you may need hiking boots for trekking tours and trips into wilderness parks.
Remember that the country has widespread and easily accessed laundry facilities, so you don’t need to overpack.
Travel Accessories
-
Water Bottle with a Built-in Filter:You’ll want to stay hydrated in Thailand's tropical climate. Bottled water is readily available, but consider a water bottle with a filter that removes microorganisms, dirt, and other contaminants for long treks.
-
Insect Repellent:Mosquitos and other bugs can interfere with your travel enjoyment, so bring something to keep them at bay.
-
Sunscreen:A severe sunburn can ruin your vacation. Choose a reef-safe sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
-
Waterproof Pouch or Case: Keep your phone and belongings dry at the beach or during jungle treks.
Technology
-
Mobile Phone and Charger:For communication, navigation, and pictures.
-
Portable Power Bank: So your phone or camera doesn’t die just when you need it.
-
Universal Travel Adapter:Thailand uses Type A, B, C, and O power outlets, so you never know exactly what you’ll get. A universal travel adapter lets you keep your electronics charged and ready to go.
Load up your phone with an offline maps app, a Thai phrasebook, and a digital travel guide before you leave. These apps make communicating and traveling much easier and don't rely on a cell signal. Also, consider installing a VPN to protect against cyber attacks through unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
Toiletries + Meds
If you use prescription medication, be sure to pack enough for your entire trip, with a few days extra to act as a buffer. We recommend packing medication in you carry-on so you always know where it is. You can buy toiletries locally when you get to Thailand, but if you favor particular brands, pack your regular items in ahanging toiletry bag for easy access at your hotel. Consider bringing these items:
-
A lightweight, quick-drying travel towel
-
Body lotion for moisturizing after spending the day in the hot sun
-
Toothbrush
-
Travel-sized toothpaste, soap, and shampoo
-
Hand sanitizer
-
Electrolyte packs to treat dehydration
-
Over-the-counter medication, including painkillers and anti-diarrhea meds
-
A small first aid kit
